I hope someone may be able to help with some operational problems in moving from v2.5 to v3. Yes, I know .....but there is a case for not being totally up to date. I have ironed out any technical (ie mathematical) problems but the operation of such an expensive but poor piece of software is staggering. We have been using it for three years and know all the groans about 'early' versions
1. I have noticed that the time set in the assignments editor does not appear the same on the class homepage. My supplier then told me to fix a the database to GMT+1 and everything seemed consistent. However, for some reason this then started behaving oddly again, being one hour out between the two readings after behaving OK!! Why is this behaving in this way? Surely, there must be a definitive setting? (I live in the UK). Perhaps it is the calendar facility setting that is fickle?
2. The ‘assignments’ page for instructors – it is very slow in loading from whichever page I try to link to it in MapleTA. It may take in excess of half a minute. It is very strange as access and links to all other pages are fine and take place within seconds if not immediately. We carried out the vacuuming recommended by the supplier but no improvement. Why this page?
3. I have had a handful of complaints from students that, when they have clicked on ‘grade’ on finishing an assignment, then they have been logged out and returned to the login page. When they have then logged in again, there is no record of that particular attempt at the assignment. This appears to be an intermittent, randomly occurring problem in a small minority of cases. We are sending log files to MapleTA as requested. Has anyone experienced such odd behaviour. We have rebooted but to no avail.
4. We are not been able to receive emails from Mapleta. This means that, any student who has gone through the ‘forgot your password?” has found the Mapleta has changed it and it has not been sent in an email. Yes, we have checked all the addresses in the database for the relevant servers
I hope someone can help us as I feel we are going under. V2.5, despite its limitations, was workable but this version... And, no, it is not practical to go to v4 during teaching.
Many thanks, Ian
Maple TA questions

The reason for the behavior you are seeing is that GMT+1 doesn't account for daylight saving time (DST) which gives +-1 hour jumps during the year. To make the TA time switch together with DST, the timezone in the database should be set for the UK to GMT0BST (where the "0" in the middle is zero, not letter O).
Vacuuming the database is a good start. If you are currently using TA 3.0, make sure that you have installed all the hotfixes issued for this version -- there were some that improved performance.
The login page will be shown when the TA session expires. This happens when a student is inactive in TA for more than 30 minutes (whereupon they just need to login again and can continue where they left off). Answered questions get recorded in the database immediately after submitting the answer, so it shouldn't be possible to lose the record of a particular assignment attempt. If however the test is set up as a practice assignment (rather than a Quiz assignment), then, by design no grade and no history is recorded.
4. We are not been able to receive emails from Mapleta. This means that, any student who has gone through the ‘forgot your password?” has found the Mapleta has changed it and it has not been sent in an email. Yes, we have checked all the addresses in the database for the relevant servers
TA has to be configured to point to your mail server. Check that the settings for the "mail" group in the system_properties database table is correct. The "From:" address used by Maple TA must be a valid address recognized by the mail server. Also, the mail server must be accessible by the Tomcat user from the host where Maple TA is running.
And, no, it is not practical to go to v4 during teaching.
Unlike the upgrade from TA 2.5 to TA 3.0, which involved major architecture changes (use of Postgres database, and Tomcat web server), the upgrade from TA 3 to TA 4 is easy and low risk, even when done in the middle of a semester. Still, the problems you are seeing with TA 3.0 look like they can be addressed without needing an upgrade.

Many thanks
Paul,
Thank you very much for your helpful suggestions.
1. I think we had it on GMT0BST and this one hour difference problem was apparent. Our supplier suggested the GMT+1 which was clearly no correct but a workaround to get over the proble - until it happened again. I think this has become embroileed in the change of hour in the UK later this month for assignments with cutoff dates beyond that. We will change back to GMT0BST and check again now that you have told us that this is THE correct setting for us.
2. I had downloaded the hotfixes after we installed v3. I have just looked and we are on 3.01 This still remains a mystery
3. This could have been a real headache but Alex below has answered this one which is in fact a bug. Publicity, what publicity?
4. I'll ask our technician to make the checks you suggest.
How easy is to upgrade in the middle of a semester, maintianing records etc?
Many thanks once again,
Ian
Missing MapleTA grades
I have had a handful of complaints from students that, when they have clicked on ‘grade’ on finishing an assignment, then they have been logged out and returned to the login page. When they have then logged in again, there is no record of that particular attempt at the assignment. This appears to be an intermittent, randomly occurring problem in a small minority of cases. This drove me crazy for months. I asked technical support for help to no avail.
The about two weeks ago, I realized that on rare occassions, MapleTA registers some students as guests, and so their grade is not recorded. When a student reports this, go to the System Homepage, look under Adminster Users, find the student and change their role.
I pointed out the bug to technical support. Here was their reply:
"Yes, there was a problem in the previous version of Maple T.A. where students could be registered with the "guest" role. This was one of the issues that was addressed in the current version of Maple T.A. (version 4.0)."
I thought it outrageous that they did not tell me this, especially since I reported the problem months earlier. We had a real rough transition from MapleTA2.5 to 3.0, and I have been reluctant to switch from 3.01 to 4.0.
Many Thanks
Brilliant, Alex! How on earth did you spot this bug? I can imagine it driving you crazy. I have only had the problem for a couple of weeks and it's bad enough! It really is undermining with students when they get this dispiriting error. Maplesoft should be ashamed at how they have handled this.
Many thanks once again,
Ian
still a problem
Hi Alex,
I changed all users to students and had a class today. Had a handful of students who experienced the same old problem. I checked and they were 'students'. Do you have suggestions?
Many thanks once again,
Ian
TA bug
I had forgotten about this bug. I think it got fixed with 3.01. Below are excerpts of an exchange I had with technical support about this issue. The bottom line for the workaround: don't let students "print for offline work" before they first (a) "Quit and Save," (b) logout, and then (c) log back in. Then they can proceed with "print for offline work."
Excerpt from response from technical support:
We have been able to reproduce the problem you mention below with printing an assignment. What we've found is that when a user starts a test and quits without saving their work by clicking "Quit and Save", the serialized version of their test is not written to the database. If the user then logs out, logs back in and restarts the test, the same active test is used, but new versions of the question are chosen.
However, if the user restarts the test without logging out, or exits the test using "Quit and Save", then serialized versions of their questions are written to the database and they will always get these questions back.
This is a bug that will need to be addressed in a future update. Thank you very much for bringing this problem to our attention. For now the way to avoid the problem is to ensure the original data gets written to the database. One way to do this is the method you suggest below.
Another is to ensure that users click "Quit and Save" when leaving an assignment.
........
Excerpt from my original message to technical support:
Another medium-serious bug in MapleTA 3.0 has come to my attention.
When a student brings up an assignment, they are presented with the option of
"Print for offline work" or "Work assignment online."
Some of my Calculus III students and I find that if one picks the print option, and then logs in >shortly< thereafter, then all is OK and as designed. Good.
But if the student waits a few hours before logging back in to the assignment, they are presented with different questions!
Disaster.
I think I have a work around, but I need to test it more.
This potential work around is to select "work the assignment online"
option first. Then select "Quit and Save". Next come back into the system, and then select the print option, and go from there as usual.
progress?
Hi Alex,
Thanks very much for this info. We have been working with Tech Support at Maplesoft and they are coming in to our server tomorrow. We shall await results...
It is amazing that the old system properties, such as session idle time etc, are now buried in the postgres database or in the file web.xml. These used to be easily accessible in v2.5
I'm very reluctant to change from 3.01 to 4 in mid semester. On past form, many bugs may have been corrected but there may be fresh problems with v4.
Ian
Anyone who had the
Anyone who had the unfortunate experience of using MAPLE TA 3.0 would have been staggered at the number of bugs associated with its release. It does not exactly fill you with much confidence with the software developers at MapleSoft.
Version 3.01 and subsequent hotfixes did resolve some issues but many others still remain such as not using the "Quit and Save" button to exit an assignment.
Does anyone know if version 4 has actually resolved issues arising from users not clicking the "Quit and Save" when leaving an assignment?
Not noticed this problem
We are using 4.0 extensively this year and have not noticed this particular problem.
Mind you we used 3.01 on a small scale over the summer without having this problem also.
Toby
PS Agree with your first two sentences. It is amazing how little has been fixed in TA4.0
Missing MapleTA grades
We have continued having trouble with missing MapleTA 3.01 grades.
Today we just realized the following "bug."
Student A enters answers and gets their assignment graded. Without closing the browser, Student B logs in to MapleTA and enters answers for their assignments. It happens frequently that the grade record for Student B is missing in the MapleTA gradebook. It turns out that the grade shows in the record for Student A! So this is where the "missing" grades are ending up.
Did Student "A" logout?
It sounds like Student "A" did not log out of their Maple T.A. session. If Student "B" then sat down at the same computer and typed the Maple T.A. URL in the address bar they would still be logged in as Student "A". This is because the browser keeps cookies for student "A", and on the Maple T.A. side the session for Student "A" is still active. Without logging out, the Maple T.A. session will be active for 30 minutes (by default).
This would be similar to logging into an online banking session and then closing the browser tab/window without hitting the logout button. If you leave your computer, anyone with access to your computer can start the browser (or open another tab), type your online banking URL, and be logged in to your session. It is very imported to log out of web sessions, especially when using a shared computer. If for some reason a user does not want to log out, they should at least clear the cookies.

logout
The key point is that Student B did login to a MapleTA session with his credentials, and was presented with his version of the assignment, and not that of Student A.
Contact Support
If you'd like you can send a snapshot of your system to support for investigation. A snapshot consists of:
• a backup of the database
• the <mapleta>/records folder
• the Tomcat log files found in <tomcat>/logs
If you could supply the login names of Student A and Student B, along with the class and assignment that would also be helpful.

support
OK-I sent an email to technical support and copied our system administrator so that the requested data will be sent.
I think the better banking analogy is this: Bank Customer A logs in to her account and transfers money from her savings account to her checking account, but does not close the browser.
Next Customer B comes along to the terminal, logs in to his account with his credentials, sees his name and accounts and feels confident that all is as it should be. He also elects to transfer money from his savings account to his checking account, only to find out indirectly that his money went into Customer A's checking account, and that he cannot readily document the error without having a bank official discover it on his behalf.
Then the bank blames Customer B for his bankruptcy because he is so naive as to not have started a new browser session.
Interesting analogy
I apologize if you feel that you're being "blamed" Alex, but that certainly wasn't my intention. We haven't received any other reports like yours, so I simply thought that a student forgetting to logout would be the most likely explanation. We should be able to give you more information once we receive the snapshot of your system.
