How many languages do you speak? Do not include computer languages

Comments

is this why some people voted 5+?

I actually speak random words and phrases in 6 other languages (no they're not SWEARS >_>)

Is that why some people picked 5+ or do I smell the scent of dishonest voters?!

My definition

I guess I could have clarified this further but I personally don't include the spot knowledge of language (e.g. basic greetings, ordering food, swearing, etc.) as speaking a language. Speaking requires an ability to actually converse (input and output) to some "reasonable" extent. Considering the very small number of 5+ I suspect most are being honest and consistent with my original sentiments. For example, I find most people in technical fields in Europe speak at least 2 languages. I have met many fortunate individuals who can do the 5+. Many in places like Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, who have multiple official languages can sometimes pick up additional ones if they study abroad, emigrate, marry someone from another culture, etc. For me, my 2 are English and my birth language Korean. Although in a pinch, I could claim French as we're taught this as an official language in Canada, it's tough for me to truly support the claim because I haven't had enough real speaking experience with French speakers to be able to conduct a decent conversation. T4.

Computer Languages should count too

It's too bad you're not counting computer languages in this poll. Some graduate programs in Mathematics require fluency in a language (French, German, Italian, Russian) and/or a computer language. I learned some Spanish in high school, studied French in college. Now I know just enough about the two languages that I get them confused and speak a blend of the two. Very Frustrating!
