f:= x->x^2: xticks:= [2,8]:
plot(f, 0..10, labels= [x,y], tickmarks= [xticks, f~(xticks)], gridlines);

I guessed that you might like the gridlines option also, but you can just take that out if you don't want it.

Thanks If it was say 3.5*10^10*x^2 that i wanted to plot maple gives these as long numbers on the scale is there any way to constarin this to g*10^5 say i.e so that it is essentially 10^ rather than a long number?

Assigned or default ticks?

Are you saying that you want to take the tickmark positions that are chosen by default and make their labels shorter? Or are you saying that you want to choose both the positions of the tickmarks (as in your prior question) and the way their labels are printed? The latter is easier than the former.
