&lt;p&gt;An unevaluated function does need to have at least a name, something to put immediately in front of the (a, b, c, d). You are right that no explict expression or -&amp;gt; is needed. I think from your example that you want to name it B. Do this:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;restart;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;strong&gt;mtaylor(B(a,b,c,d), [a=e,b=f,c=g,d=h], 2);&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
