Did you mean that you tried it on the 2D Math output from evaluating expand((x+y)^19);

I tried that with exponent 18, and then 19. Ie. I selected the whole output (without right-clicking) and waited to see if the Smart Popup menu appeared. It did, for exponent 18, but not for 19.

Then I issued stopat(SubexpressionMenu); and tried again. The debugger popped up for 18, but not for 19. This indication that Library code is not getting called on the larger example seems like a hint that there may be some kind of size cutoff in the GUI. Your problematic example doesn't look overly large to me.

In trying to discover whether there was a size cutoff I looked at the length of dotm (sprintf to "%m" format) of a call to Typesetting:-Typeset of the output expression, and tried a few other expressions, but that didn't seem to be the key metric. Maybe something else? This might be the wrong tack.

Using the popups for Maple 16 I got the following. Maybe this is a bug in Maple 17.

I can confirm that the same effect about stopping at SubexpressionMenu is observable by using mdcs. I do not believe that the dotm length of a call to Typesetting:-Typeset of the expression has relevance here. In the normal computation flow of 2-D input, Typesetting:-Parse receives from the Standard GUI a TypeMK version of the input in the form of Typesetting member calls. And it returns to the Java code a pair of (a possibly modified) TypeMK and Inert expressions. Nowhere Typesetting:-Parse and family handles dotm format, as far as I have seen. And Java code generating the input for Typesetting:-Parse would have no need of it either as the C kernel does not intervene (after observation of the localhost TCP stream) in the process generating the popup from selected output.

I believe that the issue is that there is no Smart Popup for the result of expanding . In other words, not for selecting the output but rather for selecting all of its expanded form as output.

And I see the same behaviour in Maple 16. There is no Smart Popup appearing for,

For that output, the Library routine which prepares Smart Popop menus appears not to get invoked.
