If the document that you mean is http://www.maplesoft.com/view.aspx?SF=1404/Lesson01.mw, this is a Standard GUI worksheet, not a .mws Classic GUI worksheet. So, it should not be expected opening it in Classic GUI.

Nevertheless, I have got it open in Maple 12.02 Classic GUI, after clicking "yes" to answer the question "Do you wish to continue?". Moreover, it executed without any significant problem.

Yes, that's the document I mean and it crashes for me in classic mode, but works fine in standard gui. Anyway, I'll just use it in standard gui mode. One of the problems I have with standard gui is that I get messages such as "waiting for a connection to the maple kernel" at irregular intervals and in general it seems quite slow in comparison. Also, the course I'm taking specifies that we use classic mode. Thanks anyway !

You could try opening the document with the Standard GUI and then saving it in mws worksheet format. Even when it is not exactly the Classical GUI mws worksheet format, may be that it works for you.

does mw -> mws work?

for some reason I seem to fail every time I try to convert standard to classic, I usually copy-paste the content instead, which is very tedious and time-consuming, does the conversion from mw to mws work for you?

It usually works when the worksheet contains only text and 1D input (no 2D math or output). In this case the Maple commands come out fine, but the embedded formulas come out as raw Typesetting structures.
