Scrabble at Maplesoft

Some of you might have wondered what we Maplesoft employees do in our spare time. Well, in a couple of weeks, we will be starting our 7th annual in-house Scrabble tournament. Scrabble (trademark of Hasbro, Inc.) is the popular board game in which words are formed from letter tiles. The tournament attracts participants from all parts of our company, though it is particularly popular among the R&D members.

The tournament goes over a month, with each participant playing a total of 5 games. The top players then continue on to play-off rounds. Most people play over the lunch hour in our common area, and the games frequently attract spectators. This is not an official National Scrabble Association (NSA) tournament, but we follow most of the NSA rules, using clocks and dictionaries for challenges.

I enjoy many board games, but Scrabble has always been my favourite, as it offers just the right balance between skill and chance. Are there any others on MaplePrimes who are equally enthusiastic about Scrabble?

Countdown numbers game

To colour this discussion with Maple...

There's a popular TV quiz in the UK called Countdown that's spun off into a board game. In one of the rounds ("the Numbers Game") you have do find the arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplcation and division) that make a pool of randomly chosen numbers equal to a target number.

I wrote the following Maple worksheet to automatically solve the Numbers Game.

The TV show has a presenter called Carol Voderman who has a sky-high IQ. She's invariably faster than the Maple worksheet in finding a solution.

You might want to pit yourself against the Maple worksheet in finding a solution.

I love scrabble my sister

I love scrabble my sister got me playing whenever she's back from college she'll take it out along with the official game dictionary. No clock though otherwise i'd be done with real fast I usually have her looking up all types of possible words usually I think and hope they are french but how wrong I am most of the time. Fun game good time killer. Something a little more fast paced that I enjoy playing as well is backgammon, being greek its as fun as any other game to me, all the cafes in greece have backgammon sets laying around for you to play along with other board games.
