Introducing Maple Mentors Awards

MaplePrimes couldn’t exist without the generous contributions of many talented users. They answer others’ questions and post their own valuable insights and experiences for the rest of us to benefit from. In many ways you are true mentors. The MaplePrimes editors would like to acknowledge their contributions and to encourage others to be inspired by their leadership. We will be awarding a series of prizes for exceptional and continued contributions to this site. Awards will be presented on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Winners of the monthly and quarterly awards will be determined by the MaplePrimes editorial staff. We will base the decision on quantity and quality of posts and answers. Of course we welcome your commentary and suggestions on potential recipients. The first monthly award will be presented in October 2007. The first quarterly award will be presented in January 2008. The annual prize will determined by the quantity and quality of posts and candidates must be nominated by another user. Call for nominations will be posted in the fall of 2008.

I hope Maplesoft employees are eligible

Not the ones who are in charge of running this site (as the French would say, that would be 'louche'), but those who volunteer their time and post. If current trends are any indication, I would certainly wish to nominate certain contributors who fall into this category.

900 !

Jacues,

Congrats on making 900.

I'm getting situated to begin my journey of grad school-(Physics), so I've been away from primes for some time.

Is there a color after red ?

respectfully,

I only see 895 (896 now)

Logged in as myself, my score shows up as 895 [I guess it will be 896 when I post this], so it would be odd if you saw it as 900! [Though I am sure I will get there soon enough...]

Currently, there is no color past red. Someone on another post suggested that there be a new colour established for 1000, which is a nice 'round' number to aim for. Or we could be ubber-geeks and request that it be for 1024. In any case, no Maplesoft-ite has yet replied one way or another with hints of a 'next' colour.

And good luck on the Grad School thing. Have fun with it!

A color too far

Trouble with pursuing the changing color of the Maple leaf is that you end up with a black skeletal leaf. Not very attractive. So I suggest that the thousand be marked instead by a drop of golden Maple syrup.

Yes, they are

We did discuss this and decided that despite the apparent "conflict of interest" any Maplesoft employees deemed worthy would in fact be considered.

Nominations are welcome

Although there will be a formal nomination process for the big prize (trip to the exciting city of Waterloo Canada), we also welcome ad hoc nominations and general notes of appreciation throughout the year. Simply post your comments. Anyone who would like to endorse the nomination should do so as well. We'll take such comments into account as we select the recipient. T4.

mentor nominations

It seems to me that the nominations should, as suggested be the result of both input from those who come to this forum for help as well as those who work at maple. The reason being, we who visit are the ones who are trying to learn and are perhaps the best at determining how well the ones we learn from here are able to convey their knowledge to someone who really doesn't know the answers, while those who already know the answers are most qualified at determining if those we are learning from are actually providing the "correct" solutions.

I for one can think of many that I learn a great deal from. Doug Meade, for one is someone who I consider to have very good qualities as a teacher. He is enduring, provides a lot of information, and isn't abrasive. He seems to have the teaching patience of a saint. Robert Israel seems to have an answer for just about any problem. I always read what he writes here, but don't always understand it, because I'm not at that level of understanding yet. I hope I can someday have that much knowledge about math. Jacques always forces me to think (or should I say "continue to think") "outside the box". His kind of abstract thought is very thought-provoking which I consider a very good thing. These are just a few of the ones I respect and admire here and hope to see on the list of nominations.

matter of value

A good prize would be something of value to the recipient. Of course, it's difficult to guess in advance what will be of value to any of a group of relatively unknown people.

But one thing that the especially good mentoring contributors on mapleprimes might share as a valuation is a high regard for properly working maple.

Maybe a valuable prize would be a promise of a bug fixed in the next major release, of the recipient's (reasonable) choice.

last quarter?

Who received the award for the quarter of April-June, 2008?

nobody

On account of the absence of a response, I suppose that nobody received it.
