Maple 10 and Mac OSX 10.5

barretbp's picture

So I am trying to install Maple on OSX 10.5 and I am getting this error:

Cannot launch Java application
Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.NumberFormatException: For input string: "TipCount"

Any suggestions? I have a feeling it is not a problem with 10.5 but just a Java problem in general.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Brandon

More information needed

Could you give us some more information on your computer and this situation? The important questions that we would need to help you on this issue are:

  • Are you on a Mac PPC or Mac Intel?
  • Do you have Java installed on your Mac?
  • Are you getting this error when running the installer or when trying to run the program after installation?
  • What installer are you running?

I believe this often comes up when users install the PPC version of Maple 10 on a Mac Intel then apply the Mac Intel patch (which isn't suppose to be applied to the PPC installation). If this was done, the easiest fix is to uninstall Maple, and install the correct version for your operating system.

If you continue to have problems, I suggest contacting Maplesoft Technical Support.

I used the wrong installer.

I used the wrong installer. It now works... Thanks for the advice, that would have taken me forever otherwise.

Update messes it up....

So I then did an update to 10.6 and this is where I am getting the error I described above... Any suggestions?

Update

Which installer did you use and which update did you apply?

I used the Mac OSX installer

I used the Mac OSX installer in the Mac OSX folder. And I applied the 10.6 update.

type of OSX installer

You will notice that there are two types of installers (this might not be obvious depending what version of Maple 10 you have) and two types of updaters. For the update files you will notice there is one for Mac OSX (PPC) and one for Mac OSX (Intel). For Maple 10.04 or later there are also two installers, one for PPC or Intel. If you have an installer for Maple 10.03 or earlier, you will need to contact Maplesoft Technical Support or Customer Service to get a download for the Intel version.

Also, the PPC update is for the PPC installation and the Intel update is for the Intel installation only. My mixing the two up will cause this and other errors.

So what you are saying is

So what you are saying is that I have the PPC version of the installer, since this disk is the original 10.01 from when it was first released. I will contact Maplesoft and see how that goes. Thanks for your help.

Brandon

got it to work finally.

I have Maple 10 Student Edition, with the 10.01 version of the installer, ppc only apparently. It crapped out on me when I installed leopard, and I got that same java error with the tip count thing. I tried many times using the 10.06 updater and lots of other stuff, but kept getting the error. What has finally worked is:

1. Go to the Java Preferences applet and change the APPLICATION java settings so that 1.4.2, or whatever, is at the top of the list, instead of 5.0.

2. Do a fresh install of Maple 10. Do NOT install the updater.

3. Right click on the Maple 10 program and select 'Show Package Contents'. go to the Contents folder inside, and open the file 'info.plist'. Make sure you set the permissions for the file itself, the Contents folder, and the Maple 10 program in the get info screen (highlight the item in the Finder and press command-i) of each one so that user 'admin' has read&write access. Now, inside the info.plist, open Root/Java, and edit the item 'JVMVersion' so that the value is '1.4*', instead of '1.4+'. Save the file and quit. If it won't let you save, check your permissions again.

4. Open Maple 10. Should work.

I'm thinking that the lack of working when I have the update installed may be due to the fact that the original installer is PPC, so the updater may have installed PPC code, instead of intel code, and that may be what's hashing things up. I should mention I'm running on a MacBook Pro 15" with CoreDuo, not the Core2Duo.

Hope it works for ya.

Contact Maple...

Not sure if you are trying to give me advice, but I got it fixed. All I had to do was contact Maple Support and they sent me the Intel version of the installer via e-mail. Took a few e-mails to verify that I had the liscence, but it worked perfectly...

I'm posting this incase anyone else comes across this thread...

ANSWER: Contact Maple Support and they will give you what you need.
