If you go the Help in Maple 12 Standard for "page numbers" you find directions to go to Format and look for Page Numbers, but there is no Page Numbers under Format in Maple 12 Standard (there is in Maple 12 Classic).
To set page numbering one must go to Header Footer under View. In my opinion Header/Footer is misplaced under View, since it has little to do with view --page numbers are not shown on the monitor. It should be under Format. Also it should be easier to see how to set Page Numbers and there should be an option for just the page number as opposed to page x of y or date and page. It would help if Insert Page were replaced by Insert Page Number.
Why View
The option to insert headers/footers is under view because that is where it is located in most common word processors (see MS Word for example). Once you have inserted them, you will not see them on the screen, so you need to view them...hence the reason they are under view I guess.
As for option to insert just the page number, you can. I am working from memory here as I don't have a copy of Maple on the computer I am writing this from, but there is a tab once you open the header/footer option to create your own custom headers/footers. From there you can insert just the page number in the left, center, or right part of the page.
As for the help document being incorrect, I will pass that on.
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, and others
Just checked it - in Microsoft Word 2007 that I have it is in Insert menu group - section Header and Footer, 3 selections - Header, Footer, and Page Number (each with further detalization).
View has following entries: Document Views, Show/Hide, Zoom, Window, and Macros.
I checked Microsoft Works 8.5 and Microsoft Word 2002 as well - also page numbers were in Insert menu - at the top, right after Break. Header and Footer were in View menu though in those olden days.
Now, check something different - say Lotus Symphony. Page Numbering, Header, and Footer are in Create menu group - not in View.
Star Office 8 - Header and Footer are in Insert menu, and Fields (containing Page Numbers), too.
Conclusion: Maple Standard is alone having Page Numbers in View menu - nobody else does or did (even Maple Classic has them in Format menu - not exactly Insert, but still not View).

The same
in Word 2000 and Abiword 2.4.4: Insert > Page Numbers. Also OpenOffice Writer 2.4:Insert - Fields - Page Numbers.
