I've installed Java earlier (a year or so ago) and then updated it regularly using Synaptic Package Manager. After installing Maple 12 recently, I replaced Maple's jre with sun's and it worked OK, see here.

Yes, in standard GUI one can do much more than in command line Maple. If I understand the original question correctly, (s)he wanted to do that from a command line.

I just tried to use command line to get a gif of jpeg output with π, and I was not able to (beside using external tools such as pstogif).

I would suggest to look in the mirror.

Beside that, if you were talking about Windows mimicking Linux, it is partially true. But, probably, not more than KDE mimicking Windows.

With all due respect to Linux enthusiasts, Windows Vista with Aero theme (and Windows 7 even more) desktop looks much better than any Linux that I tried.

I would change "is" to "was".

Maple was a great tool.

Now it can't even compete with free software, see that thread.

Being realistic, and choosing only one bug distracting me the most, the first thing that comes to mind is maplemint crashing Maple,

maplemint(`convert/CompSeq`);

It was reported in 2006.

According to this announcement, that was fixed in Maple 12.01.

While some bugs posted on this site (such as this one, for example) were fixed in Maple 12.01, this one wasn't.

It seems rather strange, especially because Joe Riel's simple fix suggested in this thread, corrects that for the mentioned values.

It works in my Firefox the same as in your Firfox. However, that doesn't work in IE which is my preferred browser in Windows.
