Thanks heaps mario and acer. I tried it slightly differently again (using a different example from a text) and my code came close to what you outlined for me, but still not quite and none of us understood it.

But now we all understand what is going on and should be able to apply it appropriately in our course. Once again thank you very much for your time and effort in helping us out.
