preventing blank pages from print/PDF

I'm using Maple 12.02 on a Mac under OS X.4.11 (Tiger).

Most times when I print a worksheet, or preview it or save it to a PDF, the result includes one or more blank pages.  That is, they are blank except for the vertical lines at left and right margins.  All of the worksheet material is printed, but blank pages are inserted seemingly at random.  I've found no extraneous markings on the worksheet that might cause this, and I haven't figured out how either to prevent it or to delete the blank pages from the PDF file.

I know there are commercial apps capable of editing PDF files, but I don't have any of them, nor could I find free or inexpensive ones.

Have others run into this problem and found a solution?  I would welcome suggestions.  Thanks.

Even working with Microsoft Word page breaks become dependent of the printer driver, which generally is not part of the application but located at the operating system, thus a preview is only approximative.

If you use Postscript with GSview you can select which pages are omitted on your oddly formatted document and thus can produce a pdf without blank pages - for free.

Re: typesetting

Thanks for the suggestion, Axel.  I downloaded Ghostscript, as well as Xpdf and some other files, but couldn't find a recent GSview for the Mac.  The MacGSview files seemed to be old.  I'll play around with the files and see what luck I have.

I did come across a claim that Mac OS X's app Preview can re-arrange pages in a PDF.  This would solve my problem, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get my version of Preview to do that.  Maybe it's only the more recent one that comes with Leopard that has this capability.
