The novelty of this feature wears off fast, and we found it to be less useful than advertised in our tests of the LFXC24796D model. We were also disappointed to discover that the Door-in-Door compartment was more warm than the rest of the fridge. This is a trick, and adds questionable functionality into an excellent fridge.

SmartICE is an initiative that combines Inuit expertise with modern technology to help northern communities to sustain their traditional lifestyles and cultural practices regardless of changing conditions on the ice. SmartICE's innovative, community-based model involves youngsters in the process of designing, producing and deploying stationary ice monitoring sensor. The program offers training in social and technical skills to empower youth to be effective environmental monitors.
The project has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Arctic Inspiration Prize in 2016. In the year 2019, SmartICE launched the Northern Production Centre in Nain, Nunatsiavut. This facility trains Inuits to build and deliver SmartICE stationary sensors to communities throughout Inuit Nunangat and northern Canada and around the world. It also offers meaningful employment opportunities to support the development of a healthy north.
