In Japan, coreless rolls are in the marketplace for some time. These are wound on a mandrel which is then extracted while the log is completed. At the center of the roster there's an irregular-shaped hole that is then fitted onto conventional dispensers via a "syringe-type" mechanism. Shinei, Marutomi and Kasuga appear to be the most active companies in the commercialization of these coreless rolls to the Japanese tissue consumer and institutional markets. The Product has also been quite successful in Europe, but largely in the institutional market, distributed by the Jamont group. In Korea 50-, 70- and 100-m long toilet tissue rolls have been on the market for quite a while. The 100-m rolls are pressed to take on a oval shape, thus substantially reducing their volume. It's interesting to note that this product has grown remarkably common in Korea. The two important multi-national groups, Procter & Gamble and Scott, considered this technique (also called "squeeze back cores") to be quite intriguing. They decided to start their own market testing in the USA and Italy respectively, under the brand names White Cloud - Spacesaver, and Scottex - Salvaspazio. According to some rumors on the current market, other European companies may want to take part in this emerging situation, whose future looks for now rather uncertain.
