We Have a composting toilet. It is a Sun-Mar self-evident electrical unit with the drain tube for excess fluids. It works fine as long as you follow all of the instructions to the letter. My Spouse and I live on a tiny Caribbean island, and our water is strictly restricted to the rainwater we catch on the roof and shop in a cistern. One way we save water would be by urinating in jars rather than the toilet. The pee, diluted, makes a fantastic organic fertilizer in the vegetable garden. Our European friends tell us this practice is common there among gardeners.
