My title is Chief Evangelist for Maplesoft. I interpret that as “the guy who’s been around forever”. I started my professional Maplesoft career in 1989 as a contractor trying to earn money to feed my grad student habits, like eating and visiting my parents. Before that I was introduced to what was then referred to as the Maple programming language and to my surprise, Maple immediately helped me figure things out in my courses and more importantly it made me look smarter in front of potential grad supervisors. That’s how the love affair began.

Since then I’ve held various senior positions including Vice President of Marketing and Market Development. I’ve witnessed the transformation of this company from a start-up doing something strange called “computer algebra” to a well-recognized, leading solutions company with a growing and ever diversifying user community. I’m even more thrilled at the fact that so much of our new achievements are in the world of engineering modeling and simulation which was my specialization in University.

I did my degrees at the University of Waterloo. My Bachelor and Master’s degrees were in Systems Design Engineering and my PhD in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in surface modeling for CAD systems. Along the way, I dabbled in control systems, physical systems modeling, and computer-assisted education. I still stay connected to the academic world through my position as Adjunct Professor in Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, and as a member of the Board of Governors, Renison College affiliated with the University of Waterloo.

I was born in Seoul South Korea but raised in Toronto, Canada. I moved to Waterloo, Canada to attend university and never left. I tell the Maplesoft people that it’s because of the company but it’s because I met my wonderful wife Dr. Sharon here :-)

I had the same problem with my Acer laptop but it also begin working poorly when the AC was plugged in. As it turned out, my power management software got stuck on the battery power saving mode (i.e. CPU setting to slow) even when plugged in. When I realized this, I reset the CPU setting to max even on battery power and everything has been working since. So for me there was something odd about the power management software (i.e. not behaving as it should). If you've checked all this already, perhaps you should try googling for others with the same laptop model who have had problems with the power management software. Sorry I can't be of any more help. Unfortunately, we (those from the company or from outside the company who assist testing) can't disclose details of upcoming releases. I think it is no secret that M11 is coming sometime next year. Hopefully all of you can have a bit of patience as all will become clear in the not too distant future. T4.
Hello, I enjoyed the sessions at UKM as well. Welcome to the Maple community and MaplePrimes. Tom.
Nakamura-sensei ... it's nice to see you here at MaplePrimes. Irashemasse! Tom.
Yes a couple of people have reported this. We're looking into it. Thanks. T4.
Will is currently on an extended vacation and will return in a week. He'll be able to give more intelligent comments on the feasibility of this than me. T4.
RPN was a right of passage for engineering students in the 80's (82 being my freshman year). Mine was a HP 15C as well and to this day, I think it's one of the finest bits of technology ever produced. On the odd occasion that I use calculators for something more than a trivial calculation, I really miss my old 15C. I got one of them new fangled graphing calculators through work and I still can't figure it out. HP moved away from RPN for a few years but I notice that they're proactively marketing it again (actually saw references to it in an ad) ... thanks for this trip down memory lane! T4.

Thanks for your kind wishes. I hope you like the shows. We've completed 3 episodes and I've tried to mix interesting people from outside the company as well as useful information from inside the company. As for ideas like video-podcast, i think it's a great idea but we'll take this one step at a time. I am still surprised when I hear my voice coming out from my computer ... I think having videos of me is too scary at this point :-) T4.
Your interactive documents are very nice. I am looking forward to seeing the other ones as well. T4.
:-)
Shout if you need any help. T4.
My day to day computer is an Acer TM 110 Tablet running XP Tablet PC edition. Others in the company have other Acer tablet models. Maple works fine on these in both regular and tablet mode with the screen flipped and aspect ratio changed. I'll forward your comments along ... T4.
The diagrams are quite impressive. Do you have any more information on the package? It may be a candidate for MapleConnect. T4.
Hello Alasdair. The company does offer a range of options for students to own their own copy. One such option is the Maple Adoption Program. This option typically gets the student the lowest prices. The program also provides additional material to instructors as well. T4.
