thank you very much for your response i actually spent some time over the weekend on my brothers computer, with his copy of maple 10, and writing the text file reader was simple, but maple v does not include stringtools, and an upgrade is not in the budget here at the moment, so i can't use the code i wrote there i did, however, put to use your advice and seem to have something working under maple v now thanks again
