Thanks.  I got something to work that involved "subs", but your solution is better.

Thanks, I took your advice (expand(convert(ex, exp));), and it works.  I like Maple, but in this case it seems they made it excessively difficult to do something that should be done automatically.

Yes, I made a typo in my original question.  But the real problem remains - I cannot get Maple to simplify either expression well.  If one of my students gave me an answer containing "sinh(ln(2))" on an exam, I would take off major points.

Carl:

I tried what you suggested (you are correct that the simplified answer I gave was wrong).  This is the input and output using evalc and expand:

evalc(cos(-I*ln(2)/2+Pi/4));
(1/2)*2^(1/2)*cosh((1/2)*ln(2))+((1/2)*I)*sinh((1/2)*ln(2))*2^(1/2)
expand(cos(-I*ln(2)/2+Pi/4));
(1/2)*2^(1/2)*cosh((1/2)*ln(2))+((1/2)*I)*sinh((1/2)*ln(2))*2^(1/2)

I guessed myself that I should do this but thanks anyway.

I followed your suggestion and it worked.  Having done this, is there any reason I or anyone else would want to use

Classic Worksheet mode instead of regular?

Thanks, I won't upload a Word doc again.

Thanks, I'll try that.  I thought I cut-and-pasted the file into a Word document and uploaded it, but maybe I goofed.  I'll make sure to do that the first time I post next time.

Works like a charm.  Thanks for your prompt and perfect solution.
