With its depiction of a bookstore manager’s toxic obsession with an aspiring writer, You is a disturbingly compelling series that examines the dark side of relationships. Its first season, based on the book by Caroline Kepnes and developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, follows Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), a bookstore manager who obsessively pursues grad student Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Their relationship soon escalates into a terrifying tale of web hacking, stalking and violence under the guise of romance. While You is a fascinating show that demonstrates the twisted pull of romantic tropes, it has never fully examined its protagonist’s motivations for his crimes. Despite his rambling narration directed to “you,” Joe believes his actions are motivated by love and self-defense, a logic that he invokes after every thrown punch or basement cage. This is a dangerous misreading of the show, which was initially intent on demonstrating and deconstructing the eerie, extraordinary pull of romance clichés and the ways that they shape our expectations for relationships. As the second season began, we saw Joe’s manipulative machinations begin to unravel, but it wasn’t until the third and fourth seasons that the full depths of his psychopathy became clear. At ?????????? ??????? , he’d killed a dozen people and seemed to have his darker tendencies under control, but with the show entering its fifth and final season it appears his murderous spree is far from over. During its 10-episode run, You flirts with being outright pulpy trash but gleefully bounces between genres, highlighting the many ways that these genres prop up systems that prioritize the feelings and accomplishments of toxic men. Over the course of the series, You visits the romantic comedy, the "bad boy reformed by a good girl" story and the stalker thriller, stealing only what it needs from each and leaving their corpses to molder in the ground. Netflix has handed a fifth and final season to the series, which will see Badgley return as antihero Joe Goldberg. Its original creator, Sera Gamble, is stepping down from her day-to-day role, but she will continue to be an exec producer alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Alloy Entertainment’s Gina Girolamo and Leslie Morgenstein. Longtime writers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will take on showrunning duties for the remaining episodes, with Gamble retaining her exec producer credit and overseeing the project’s writing. The series is produced by Berlanti Productions, Alloy Entertainment and Warner Bros Television. Cardiff University provides funding as a founding partner of The Conversation UK.
