ok.  i have made much progress today using your code and the skytopia crash course.  the only thing that puzzles me still is the use of instr-1 in the definition of m in your midi procedure.  why not just instr?  thank you. pwh.

can I use a single numerical value to get black. if I plot using plot3d(............,color=.9) then the plot will be purple. if I plot using plot3d(.............,color=.1) then the plot will be gold. what numerical value will give me black?
