like if you have ax^2+by^2 = 4 then ax^2+by^2+c would equal to 4+c. but the thing is, is that the expression above equal to zero is in the large expression, but mixed in with other terms, so maple does not recognize what you can substitute in for zero.

how do i extract or isolate a*e^3+b*e^2+c*e+d in the large expression a*(1/2*e+1/2*f)^3+b*(1/2*e+1/2*f)^2+c*(1/2*e+1/2*f)+d

ok thanks alot for the response, i got it working. but now i have the large expression: a*e^3+3*a*e^2*f+3*a*e*f^2+a*f^3+2*b*e^2+4*b*e*f+2*b*f^2+4*c*e+4*c*f+8*d now i dont know how to substitute in a*e^3+b*e^2+c*e+d=0 i am guessing i must ask maple to split or ungroup the large expression into another one which includes the substitution expression separate and alone. how do i do that? as well, how do i get maple to express it in one entire fraction just as if i used the numer and denom commands and put those values on top of each other without simplifying?

thanks, i just discoverd the sort command in the forum
