  • hi everybody, I tried to install Maple 10 on my AMD64 Athlon 3200+ (running with Fedora Core 4 64bit Kernel 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4). Well, the installer worked just fine, except the activation - unable to determine Host ID. So I activated Maple offline. After the installing, the first problem I had to handle with was the "read only" mode off all installed executables - I think I changed the mod off all executables in the maple 10 folder... Now I was able to run the command line mode of maple. But I am still not able to run Maple in X11 mode - when entering ./maple -x or ./xmaple nothing happens, no error - nothing. Since Maple is working in the commandline mode, I assume that it has to do with java somehow. Well, I am not really an experienced Linux user, but I installed jdk-1.5.0-06, hoping it will solve the problem, without success :-( . I now that Fedora Core 4 is not supported, but I don't see why Maple should not work properly here if it does with redhat. Well, it would be really great if somebody has a solution to this problem.
I remembered another request I have for Maple. Something that was available in the past for Maple under Mac OS. But not now. (So I have it set up with QuicKeys to do what I want.)

We now have return and shift-return to do two different things. I'd like to be able to switch these, or to let enter do one of them independent of which return does.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of the student version of Maple 10. The graphing calculator is neat, and I'm having a blast learning the Maple interface.
One of the best features of MaplePrimes is that members can incorporate typeset 2-D mathematics into their posts—a huge advantage over text-only forums like Usenet, for example. MaplePrimes currently allows math input using either Maple syntax or MathML. There may be a straightforward way to support the input of 2-D math using TeX/LaTeX as well. This post suggests one possible way to add this new functionality to MaplePrimes.
I really like that MaplePrimes tracks the number of times each blog and forum post is read. Could MaplePrimes also track the number of times each file attachment is downloaded? That would be great! -- Frederick W. Chapman, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Waterloo http://www.scg.uwaterloo.ca/~fwchapman/
When MaplePrimes displays a list of posts in a table (e.g., all posts in a particular forum, all posts by a particular member), it is hard to read the post titles because there is no separation between the rows of the table. There are several ways MaplePrimes could make these tables easier to read:
u3d became a popular format for 3D graphics and with Adobe Acrobat/Reader 7.07 embracing it
(sorry, everybody but MacOS/Windows users seem to be left on cold now) it seems to be great
for electronic publishing (look at first few links from http://www.microtype.com/homenewupdated.html)

Unfortunately so far only CAD and Framemaker seem to have u3d export.

My suggestion: provide u3d export for Maple 3D graphics
In my brief experience posting to my blog and to forums on MaplePrimes, I've noticed the following four issues:
I joined MaplePrimes three short days ago and already feel very enthusiastic about all it has to offer. Just yesterday, I introduced myself in my first blog post. Much to my amazement, my post was read over 150 times in the first 24 hours, which is more traffic than my home page sees in weeks—what a great website! I have some questions and suggestions concerning MaplePrimes member profiles:
Hi everyone! I want to thank Tom Lee for inviting me to join the MaplePrimes community. I feel very enthusiastic about the creative potential of this wonderful collaborative resource and want to take a moment to introduce myself. My first blog post includes a brief biography and states some of my Maple plans and research goals.

    Hello,

I read some other entries here and there of users having problems with the Maple 10 editor. Just wanted to know if we are isolated cases under Linux and Mac or if this is bigger issue.
I am working under Linux FC4, and for me it requires a lot of patience with this editor. He jumps here and there, the cursor disappears in the wide space of my worksheet, copy and paste into a string is not possible at all...
I knew previous versions (Maple 7), their editor had their own life too, but this is the top. And in fact, I hoped that they finally come up with a less peculiar editor. Instead I see a lot of cosmetics. Or am I wrong ?
It seems that it is impossible to put on a plot a text wich would include Greek letters, for instance sin(alpha), where "alpha" is a Greek alpha. For instance, demonstarting a solution of the pendulum problem I would like to show the angle alpha by which the pendulum is offset from equilibrum and the component of the gravitational force which pushes it back to equilibrium - m g sin(alpha). I use Maple 10 in Document Mode. How do I set up page headers and footers in a document so when it prints one can see the document title, date,, page number, etc.?
