I see now! Indeed, starting X causes more memory usage rather than CPU. I have a plain kde3 desktop with no effects whatsoever, so nothing CPU intense. Since my programs only need a fraction of my RAM, I'll stick with the GUI. Thanks again, it's clear now.

Hi again, I just thought about something else: What if I don't use a graphic environment at all? I am not talking about the maple GUI, I am talking about running my operating system without graphics (in linux, booting in command line without starting X). Do you think this will result a faster maple (because less CPU will be used for graphics)? I understand that this probably is a a general technical question, not so much maple-oriented, but maybe somebody knows the answer..

Hi acer, thanks a lot for your reply! No, my output is just a few lines with some numbers every day. No plots, no graphs or anything like this. Also, what I am doing require too little memory, but lots of CPU. So, I guess running the command line interface will not make any difference. Thanks for clearing things out!
